The Photo Institute August Speakers Series

June 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I am happy to announce the first in a long tradition of month-long events at The Photo Institute. Every Tuesday and Thursday night throughout the month of August, some of Second Life’s best photographers will be at TPI to tell us their secrets, answer your questions and show us their best work.

Come and see Lem Skall, Ahmad Hosho and others.

The speaker events will begin at 7pm SLT and will run an hour or so. Come with plenty of questions and be prepared to be amazed.

We’ll be posting the entire schedule in a week or so, so stay tuned.

Hi, I’m Kee

May 26, 2008 · 1 Comment

I’m the head of faculty here at TPI. I and the other teachers here are planning to use this blog to show you a bit of our work, link you to the school and talk about various aspects of using Second Life to take photographs. Let’s start with a picture (of me, of course)…

This is a self portrait I took during our first semester.

Second Life presents a host of challenges to photographers: there are issues involving lighting, posing, wardrobe, environment and various technical issues to be learned about (and, in some cases, overcome). Sometimes it seems like the people who have the most Real Life photography training and experience have the most trouble in SL.

In subsequent posts I’ll get into some of what we teach here and give you a look at the school itself.

Oh yeah… we can be found at:

The Photo Institute of Second Life

May 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The Photo Institute is Second Life’s premiere photography instruction school. From beginner to advanced, TPI can teach you to take better pictures. We’ll help you to better understand the nature of and intricacies of Second Life’s unique photo-taking system, to learn more about such subjects as composition and lighting, and expand your knowledge and understanding of photography in general.

As of this date, TPI is entering it’s fourth semester of teaching. We’ve already helped dozens of students become better photographers in Second Life. Our classes run the gamut from beginners’ courses for those who want to learn the basics of the SL camera functions and capabilities, to advanced classes in composition, lighting and other technical issues, and intensive workshops in subjects such as portrait photography, landscapes, and shooting the nude.

We offer several types of classes and workshops to meet every student’s needs: From semester-long classes of six weeks each, meeting twice a week, to one-hour lectures featuring some of SL’s finest photographers, and short-term workshops that can take as little as one to three hours, or sometimes an hour a week for two to four weeks.
